Narrow Larry’s World of the Outstanding

Don’t miss this “Don’t-Miss-This” alert! You absolutely must see Narrow Larry’s website for two very good reasons: Links to folk art and images of Houston’s iconic past.

Folk Art – Larry has traveled the country to bring us samplings of folk art from self-taught visionary artisans who created folk art worth traveling to witness. Some of the documented destinations remind me a bit of places like Houston’s Orange Show and the Beer Can House. Who knew all of these monuments to creativity existed? And how can we help preserve them? Working on that one. Feel free to reply and drop a link.

“Houston Gone!” turns an eye to the vanished. Narrow Larry assembles a collection of images from Houston’s iconic past. Despite living in Houston for many years, I’ve obviously missed much of the ethos that fashioned our modern urban landscape.

One incredible but sad example of what can be lost if we don’t find ways to preserve homegrown artistry is displayed in the gallery pictorial of the Flower Man, an iconic figure who won battles with his demons and created art – much folk art – in an installation that is now gone. Narrow Larry showcases images from the Flower Man’s last two homes – truly shrines to his artistic talent and vivid imagination.

Thank you, Narrow Larry… for without people like you, more would be lost.
