SHOP THE CURVE

Many of Houston artist Sam Van’s current fans discovered her enchanting vintage clothing store first. Way back when…, Wear it Again Sam anchored the “curve” on lower Westheimer. Conveniently located below the iconic “Shop the Curve” sign, the amusing shop displayed a fabulous selection of vintage clothing, an eclectic mix of accents, and Sam, a colloquial proprietor more fascinating than the merchandise – an amazing feat.

Patrons quickly became Sam’s friend as she juggled queries, tasks and tales on the main floor to please all callers – both regulars and newbies. Over time, Sam transitioned away from brick-and-mortar retail and became a successful fulltime artist. But don’t lament the store’s closing because many of Sam Van’s current creative works have ties to the old store. As it turns out, unique accessories, shoes, hats, jewelry, lingerie and textiles from the 1920’s – 1970’s, make delightful props for the imaginative subjects of Sam’s animal portraits and milieu.

KATZ N HATZ

As Sam Van’s creative productions evolved, they maintained kinship with the old Montrose store. For example, a new line of paintings memorializes her favorite pieces of vintage Americana with the aid of a contemporary furry friend. “Katz n Hatz” is the new line of fanciful animal portraits where regal cats wear an illustrious hat from the 40’s. No surprise that these ingenious compositions are among Sam’s favorite configurations.

Houston Gallery: Katz n Hatz portraits are currently on display at the El Gato Cat Cafe in the Heights (508 Pecore St Suite A, Houston, TX 77009) where a dozen or so furry friendlies roam the counters, tables, shelves and elevated catwalks. partnering with the Houston Humane Society to place kitties in need
