Whole Foods Straddles Midtown-Montrose

Amazeballs Whole Foods appears… disappears… reappears, straddling Midtown and Montrose. Wow! It’s like a for-real enigma with a riddle wrapped in a mystery… or maybe heat-induced mirages are at issue here. You decide.

Construction cranes are fairly common in Houston as they have been for decades except midrise cranes sprouting residential buildings are the new thing now. Which brings me to a pet peeve right up near the top of the list. Why don’t more residential developments provide street-level retail?

Beats me. Seems like the economics would have to work, and how easy it must be to sell a new tenant/buyer on the prospect of leaving their car parked in place while they shop, eat, workout, fun-out on the streets below.

So you can imagine how thrilled I was to discover that a Whole Foods store was part of the midrise construction at Bagby, Brazos, Elgin and Anita. I told everyone about the heralding signage strapped to the chain-link fence proclaiming an onsite announcement.

One friend had to see for himself and we toured the location, excited to have a prominent anchor at the end of Westheimer. Lower Westheimer, whew, if those blocks could talk… stories for another time.

But guess what? There were no fracking Whole Foods signs, just images of happy people enjoying life in their new luxury residences at the nexus of Montrose and Midtown. A bit too happy to suit me and a lot happier than I was at that moment.

We surveyed the entire block, not once but twice, even stopped the car to walk the fence. Wow, what a pit. The dig was deep enough for at least two levels of parking for the whole block. I was so embarrassed and disappointed – as was my friend who was disappointed for him and embarrassed for me.

Time passed as I pondered the mirage. Was it my miscue, slippage, incompetence, mental state, etc. You got it. I knew what I saw but doubted the same. Maybe a few hot runs at the park or immersion into a wing of surrealism at the Menil would correct my orientation.

Still no resolution as the days got longer and hotter, too hot to run at the park on every day. I chose a walk in the hood one bright morning because it was hotter than a firecracker on the Fourth of July. And it was the Fourth of July.

My walk path ambled by Brenan’s, the closest restaurant to me – wish I could afford to eat there, and The Breakfast Club – wish I could afford to break my diet long enough to eat there. I also walked by Damian’s Italian restaurant, a few favorite Asian fare spots, and a pastry shop, noting that gelato was present. I guess you could say that I had food on my mind… like an amazeballs Whole Foods!

Whole Foods! Across the street, there it was, the iconic green circle with additional clean-font letters across the street-level of an image along the construction fence of the midrise building. What the—? The Whole Foods store is coming to the hood again. I’m betting there was some legal wrangling or such and some eager promoter got ahead of his or her skis.

Wait until I tell my friend. On second thought, maybe I’ll just wait this time until the doors open.
