Rainbow Crosswalk Signals More

What’s more surprising than a bold rainbow-colored crosswalk in the heart of Montrose? Just about everything, especially finding people using the crosswalk.

Pedestrians in Houston? Are they crazy? I remember the first time I ventured out to cross a street way back in the 1990’s. I left the SUV parked in the garage and dared to walk two short blocks to Kroger. Never mind that I probably had just run five miles at Memorial Park, I had never before considered the trifling hike as plausible. Here’s why – when I crossed Montrose properly at the intersection… one surprised driver honked at me! Another car braked unnecessarily on the side street.

Well – news flash – times have changed and there are many pedestrians and bikers now. Those familiar with Houston sprawl may not have noticed the persistent urbanization of our city but Houston has always been dense and diverse when compared to cities in the interior of the country. Chicago stands out with the highest density between the east and west coasts but Houston is the most diverse city now, even nudging out New York City for that honor (per Rice U. study).

Maybe Houston’s proximity to the Gulf wetlands encouraged growth upward. That’s logical since most dense cities hug a shoreline. I’m betting that Houston’s no-zoning posture helped make vertical happen.

Downtown has to tip its hat to Uptown and both have to nod approval to beautiful gleaming structures sprouting up in between.

Meanwhile, Houston sprawl continues but the suburbs are real, with fast-growing cities new to America like Katy and Pearland. Conroe – surprise – is the fastest growing city in America according to the U.S. Census Bureau and Houston often is the fastest growing large city.

So thank you Houston and Pride Committee for the first-in-Texas rainbow crosswalk. And thank you newbies and immigrants and everyone involved in making our city diverse and accepting and a great place to live. The American dream is alive and well here. Here’s hoping the rest of the country discovers the success of our grand experiment.
