Lighten Up workshop at Alley Theatre

“Dear Fan of New Work,” read the open invitation from the Alley Theatre. A workshop showcasing a thoughtful new stage performance was the topic. Lighten Up, a multimedia production of music and film with spoken and choreographed artistry to elevate the senses. The transformative theatrical memorial honored the Flower Man, an iconic Houston figure of the past several decades with ties to Louisiana and Mississippi – alcohol – and God.  The Flower Man obviously found faith and used it steadfastly to waylay his demonic alcoholic dependencies for at least “26 years” and transform his world into three decades of art, turning his home into a shrine of faith and sobriety.

The performance was exceptional for a workshop. No qualms with any of the talent and I applaud their well-played efforts – all of them. I particularly enjoyed the music, especially the well-timed bassoon appetizer and the keyboard player was always on the mark. Overall, I also enjoyed the progression of short stories aided by video and real-time recreations of the Flower Man’s art.
