Save the Astrodome

Save the Astrodome! Houston’s Iconic architectural gem was declared the Eighth Wonder of the World when it opened 50+ years ago. Now Astro-Main Street area along Interstate 610 Loop is primed to become a world-class city center—if we save the Astrodome!

Nickname Earned

The Astrodome earned its “Eighth Wonder of the World” nickname. After natural grass on the playing surface died, the Astrodome became the first major sports venue to install artificial turf—thus AstroTurf.

More fun facts: The Dome was home to the first skybox and an animated Texas-sized scoreboard,150 yards wide.

Astrodome Achieved Global Recognition

The Astrodome was celebrated globally, too. Witness these two articles from the Smithsonian and Guardian UK:

Save the Astrodome – Here’s a Plan

The Astrodome was ahead of its time and solidified Houston’s position as an energetic, can-do city capable of accomplishing big things and attracting global commerce and attention. Houston continues to entertain plans to lead the world and showcase how to repurpose an amazing artifact of history.

The ASTRODOME-TOMORROW Reliant Park Program was one of the best plans presented. The master plan for Reliant Park and the Astrodome showcased a breathtaking space experience inside the dome along with museums and retail. A new 90-acre green park outside the dome added water features and tree-covered parking. Plus, a monorail connected it all.

ASTRODOME-TOMORROW’s mission to save the Astrodome from demolition seems to have worked. I hope many of their awesome park features are developed. Some highlights from the master plan.

  • Repurpose the Astrodome – establish a regional epicenter for commerce, education, and entertainment within a new green park. Museum and innovative entertainment venues will elevate Houston to the status of a destination city for international tourism.
  • Replacement Arena – replace the inadequate Reliant Arena with a new Arena complex located inside the Astrodome where it becomes the nexus of much needed, expanded exhibition space.
  • Exhibition Space – 500,000 square feet of exhibition space in multiple new venues including the New Arena, an Exhibition Sky Bridge connecting the Astrodome to Reliant Center, Atrium Hall which adds exhibition and stall space for Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and an exciting new street-level floor inside the Astrodome amidst museums and special entertainment venues.
  • Comprehensive Need – ASTRODOME*TOMORROW solution provides a property-wide approach to create a spectacular 90-acre park with iconic special features surrounding a repurposed Astrodome filled with world-class venues open year-round to ensure a constant flow of visitors and revenue.
  • Sight Lines and Access – ASTRODOME*TOMORROW advocates for new structures and improved access features that enhance visual, pedestrian and vehicle access to the property and reveal the beauty of the Astrodome in a green park setting.
  • Parking – 20,000 new covered parking spaces and replace concrete parking lots with a green park. Income from parking will benefit the stakeholder tenants and the taxpayers.
  • Traffic Flow – Adds an exciting new transportation option – a dual-track Monorail system will service area parking garages and double as an entertaining park ride.
  • Parks and Venues – Creates a crown jewel for the park system, one that will become known around the world.
  • Astro-Main City Center – The Reliant Park Program creates a major city center and business district to anchor the south Main Street corridor along the I-610 Loop.
  • International Tourism Appeal – The repurposed Astrodome and new Reliant Park creates a true world attraction for Houston capable of generating global interest for tourism and thus the capability to benefit from the highest revenue levels of international tourism.

It’s easy to locate Chris. He’s still connected to most public forums having anything to do with the Eighth Wonder of the Word.
