On a hot, sunny summer afternoon a welcome swath of shade fell across the parking lot at the corner of Montrose and Hawthorne. The shadow stretched from a new landmark piercing the Columbia blue sky, the 30-story Montrose landmark building at 3400 Montrose. It is nearing completion and preparing luxury apartments for occupancy this fall.
The structure is much higher than the 10-story landmark building it replaced. Hannover-Montrose is visible from Midtown, Woodland Heights and elevated spots between Downtown and Uptown. If the 3400 Montrose address sounds familiar, there’s probable a smile on your face – like mine.
The penthouse floor of the older Montrose landmark building was frequently the home of live jazz entertainment and the destination for many southwest Houstonians. Over the years nightclubs at 3400 Montrose provided a great spot for a first venture into the hood.
I went to Cody’s my first week in town with new neighbors and friends in tow. Actually I was in tow, still being led around and very grateful for that because of the tricky arcane parking garage.
After you found a parking spot and we did, always on an incline, it was almost like spelunking when it came to locating the obscure elevator lobby. A few times we took the stairs to the top because the elevator was so slow (and probably because we were young and amply lubricated). The tenth-floor penthouse, which was operated as a club up until the building closed due to its dilapidated state in 2010, offered a spectacular view of downtown that made it a major social hotspot for decades. In various incarnations, it was Top of the Mark, the Palace Club, Cody’s and finally Scott Gertner’s popular jazz rendezvous, Sky Bar.
