Pulse vigil at City Hall

A friend handed me an unlit candle. We shared a few stories amidst friends and strangers, some with little kids, others had a pet or a bike… boyfriends hugged girlfriends, hundreds of people were there. City Hall was in the distance, too far to really hear every word of the appropriately upbeat program to counter the horrific terror and hatred visited on Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando where 49 angels fell victim during a shooting rampage. Fifty-plus more loving, caring, beautiful persons were injured and could have been killed.

The multiplicity of the crowd at the vigil clearly matched the diversity of our city and their sentiments of compassion and resolve honored the 49 victims. “We are Pulse” read many signs of love – not hate – that connected attendees to the Orlando tragedy.

The rainbow colored lights washing over the exterior of City Hall became more apparent as dusk advanced. Candles were lit when the all 49 names were read aloud.

A rare strawberry moon rose through the high-rise canyons of downtown as hot wax dripped from the candle and burned me a few times, but the pain I felt was sadness for those lost and their families and friends.
