Memorial Park Running Trail

A 3-mile loop at Memorial Park has been my favorite run-walk trail for more than a couple of decades and I’m not alone — The Seymour Lieberman Exer-Trail at Memorial Park is the most-used exercise trail in Houston. I even saw President George H. W. Bush (and his Secret Service detail) there once since he is known to favor it, too.

A main path circumnavigates Memorial Golf Course and fits nicely between Memorial Dr., West Loop, I-10 and the Beer Can House. Access is phenomenal from every direction if you know how to avoid the worst of rush hour traffic, and there’s always parking somewhere although occasionally you might have to park a bit past your favorite warmup spot. I use to drive in on Woodway Dr. but now I sneak up from Montrose on Waugh Dr. When I lived in the Heights I discovered that either I-10 or Washington St. were prime routes and I often took one route inbound, the other outbound.

Many dedicated runners use the trail but there’s plenty of space for walkers. A 2015 trail surface renovation vastly improved the pathway and drainage although I must admit that the swamp that develops after rains transforms the area into a interesting alternative bio park.
